Iago was glad that the morning classes had gone well enough. The students in said classes had been biddable, and just as well, since he wasn't the sort to deal with misbehavior gently. Yet, young Italians weren't always obedient, and unfortunately he had to be controlled and collected whenever some brat was getting at his bad side. Sometimes he wondered why he was here teaching in the first place, considering that he had a short fuse and wasn't the best influence for the young ones. His roguish demeanor rather contradicted the need for professionalism in his field of work, and yet he managed somehow. He couldn't shake off the feeling that he just needed to be here...well, of course, there was Gio, but on the other hand he couldn't really understand what had gotten into him to want to teach.

Anyhow, he was here and wasn't about to leave anytime soon. Even if he wasn't pleased with all that his job entailed, he didn't wholly regret it either. But still, he needed some time to himself to recuperate a bit before heading back into respectable professor mode. A decade ago he wouldn't have dreamed of accomplishing such a feat, but age seemed to have an effect on him--whether it was an adverse one or not, he had yet to know.

One purely positive aspect about being at Firenze though, aside from getting to see Giovanna on an almost daily basis and having her within arm's reach, was that it was good to be in Firenze again. He'd never really thought much about it after graduating, but now that he had returned he felt himself feeling a slight feeling of nostalgia. It really helped that the school, which in itself was a stately building, was situated on beautiful grounds. Otherwise, he wouldn't really have given a damn about it.

Iago headed to the courtyard and sat down on one of the many benches under the shade of a tree. He crossed his arms and heaved a sigh. Back in the days when he was a young and ripe student the courtyard had been a place where he hung out with his friends, picked on others, and flirted with girls. Now, however, he was just a grumpy old professor who had recently quit his lifelong job of being a hit man sitting about aimlessly. Quite the difference between the two comparisons.

Seven years teaching. Giovanna didn't think she would last this long, but apparently somehow she had. She didn't necessarily enjoy the work and even though she hadn't found the mythical object yet, she didn't have her hopes up. At least all of their group was teaching there now, so they had a better chance of finding it. Though of course Giovanna didn't entirely trust them all. She wasn't sure how she stood with Iago, though. His brother was now in her family and even though they knew each other for most of their lives from schooling, she still didn't trust him. Even though they had dated and were engaged briefly over a decade ago. But that was so long ago, Giovanna didn't think that really affected their alliance right now.

She wandered out into the courtyard to get some fresh air. She had been cooped up grading things and doing her own work for a while, so she fancied some time outdoors. And of course Iago was there. Why couldn't she just have some peace? He was probably going to tease her for not having found the object yet after being there for so long. Or perhaps he would just leave her alone. They were very different people than they were when they had been engaged, so Giovanna didn't assume to know him on any level, not like before.

"Hello, Iago," she said simply as she sat beside him. She took in a deep breath and let her head fall back, closing her eyes. It was nice to be outside. Giovanna had never been much for books and trying to dig down and research into where this object could possibly be was proving to be not her cup of tea.

Iago's light-blue eyes sharply bore upon the female figure approaching him. It was Giovanna herself, and he couldn't help but feel that his quarry was making its way toward him. Of course, the truth was that was not so. Giovanna still remained every bit the independent spirit she was, which he both admired and felt frustrated of. He wished she would just give in and succumb to his charms, as many less willful women would've, but at the same time he wondered if he would've been so fascinated by her if she wasn't herself.

Though, it wasn't like he was at liberty to say he still knew her today, because he didn't. So much time had changed, and obviously they both developed during the past ten years--ten years in which he should've moved on from her but couldn't bring himself to. Even though he didn't know what the current Giovanna was like, he had a feeling that her essence still remained the same. It was evident by the fact that she had her ambitions set upon unearthing the mysterious artifact at Firenze; inaction just wasn't her forte.

He followed her with his gaze as she sat down beside him. "Giovanna," he said simply, smirking slightly. He uncrossed his arms and casually spread them out across the top of the bench, though it looked very much like he had his arm around her shoulders. "You don't look too lively."

His smirk widened somewhat with that remark. Or more like a probe at her choice of job. Even though he was a professor here himself, he still thought she was wasting her time here as a professor at Firenze. After all these years it seemed that she'd only achieved putting up with annoying brats, providing them with lessons, and tediously grading their assignments and whatnot--and she had yet to find the dark object; of course, he was going to help her with that, but still. She could be doing more fruitful things. Though, he was just being resentful for the fact that she chose this independent lifestyle over being with him.

There was part of Giovanna that was glad to see Iago again, but then parts that didn't want his in her face at all. She wanted to just quit and travel the world again. But a second time seemed boring. Everything seemed boring and pointless, actually.

"I'm more lively than you," she stated simply. Giovanna leaned into the back of the bench, not caring that his arm was around the back of it. "And I really just don't have the patience for games right now," she sighed. She had to be honest. Most of the time, they teased, they beat around the bush, never actually being truthful or honest with each other. But teaching was really starting to wear on Giovanna, at least on this day, and she just couldn't deal with Iago's antics at the moment.

Iago was about to make an Iago-style response to her protest about being livelier than him, but stopped himself when she straightforwardly told him she wasn't up for their playful exchange of words. He was glad that was one thing that hadn't changed between them just because he enjoyed the flirting banter, but at the moment she couldn't be bothered. Something stressful must have happened to dampen or mood or something like that, and he could name a few things from being a professor that could set anyone off their rocker.

He sighed. "Fine," he said reluctantly, knowing it was futile to push her further when she wasn't in the mood for it. And with that, Iago arched an eyebrow and cast her a speculative look. "Had a bad class?" His tone was knowing, since he was taking the liberty to assume that he was right. How else could it be with their godforsaken jobs here?
